Our Trip to Door County (2023)--Day 6

Newport State Park

An early 7 a.m. breakfast at the Village Café started our day out—pretty tasty but slightly expensive breakfast fare is featured here. We left satisfied and full. After heading back to the resort to gather my camera and a few other things, we drove to Newport State Park to see what this park had to offer. It took a while to get there, about 40 minutes but what else did we have to do on this sunny, slightly cool morning! Newport is a pretty nice park with some easy trails to hike. There are many decent views of Lake Michigan (we’re now on the east side of the peninsula) and we walked part of the Europe trail and the Newport trail. We had a good time.

On the drive back, entering Sister Bay, Patty kiddingly said, as we entered Sister Bay “I should call them (employees at Al Johnson's) up and say ‘hey *******, we drove a long way. Get those goats out on the roof!’” in reference to the goats which dine on the grass on top of Al Johnson’s. Wouldn’t you know it but they were on the roof as we drove past! A group of people had gathered and were watching, some taking pictures. We pulled off into a parking spot, got out and took some pics while talking to a few other people scattered on the sidewalk across the street from Al Johnson's.

Sturgeon Bay is the only town in Door County of any decent size, with about 10,000 people. Potawatomi State Park sits just to the west and it was the only state park in Door County we didn’t explore during our trip. But this town had tonight's dining choice.

When you enter Sonny’s Pizzeria, you have three choices on where to sit—an outside table, inside in the bar or upstairs. We chose an upstairs table with big windows overlooking Sturgeon Bay. Nice views! As soon as Patty saw the salad bar, she knew what she wanted for dinner. It’s priced very reasonably at $5.99, albeit a bit limited on options. I browsed the extensive menu—they have 11” Neopolitan pizzas and I chose the Calabrese which had Italian Sausage, Pepperoni and Sopressata. It was not quite up to the quality of Pizza Bros but was excellent nonetheless. Our bill was $24 pre-tip.

Afterward we drove to Walmart but our search for T-shirts was in vain. One of the desk ladies back at the resort then told us they had an entire section of Door County type wear in the far left side of the store! We talked about stopping in on the way out of town since they open at 6 a.m. but probably won’t.

I did as much packing as I could tonight. The plan is to be up tomorrow at 6:30 to shower, eat leftover Pizza Bros pizza and then get out of here. Hope to be back in Duluth by 3 p.m.
