Our Trip to Door County (2023)--Day 5
5/24/2023

Peninsula State Park

Ever have one of those days where you wake up wanting to do nothing but your partner makes it clear he/she will be quite unhappy if you follow your desire? Welcome to Lee’s Wednesday morning world. Initially I was using the predicted high in the mid-50s with strong northeast wind as a reason/excuse for not venturing outside and checking out Peninsula State Park, which had been our plan for this day. In the end, I relented and was quite happy I did.

It was a bit cool but nothing a person born and bred in Duluth isn’t used to, and even with the strong winds at time (mostly up on the Eagle Tower), it didn't feel that bad. But it was the brightest sunniest day we’d enjoyed since arriving in Door County and the high haze from the Canadian wildfires had nearly completely abated. So we were off to Peninsula State Park near Fish Creek. The point of interest we wanted to check out was Eagle Tower with its expansive views of the bay. We used the southern entry point on the other side of the park and it was a lengthy drive across the park to the tower—Peninsula State Park is big! This is the largest state park of the four in Door County. After a wrong turn or two we located the tower. There are two ways to access the observation deck on top; you can climb a lengthy flight of stairs or can walk up an inclined ramp. Of course we chose the latter! It was quite windy at the top but not particularly cold and the views were outstanding. I got a lot of pics on the way up the ramp and on the deck. From there, driving around, we found a lighthouse where we had a nice conversation with an elderly couple—he was sporting a Nikon D810. We took pictures of each other and then returned to Egg Harbor.

Or perhaps a much easier ramp? (Our choice!)

With my lunch options for the next two days in question—Patty had her drummies to munch on--I ordered another Supreme Pizza from Pizza Bros and had a couple slices for lunch, leaving enough for tomorrow's lunch and breakfast on Friday prior to our checking out and heading home.

The culinary high point of our trip would be realized tonight at Chop, a steakhouse in Sister Bay. The waitress at Shipwreck Brewpub has recommended this to us--our initial choice was the Mezzanine but deferred to someone's opinion who actually lives here!

Her recommendation was spot on. We each ordered the Early Dining Special which consisted of a starter, a steak and a dessert. You can pass on the dessert and get an extra starter, which I opted for. My starters were Caesar Salad and Pork Pot Stickers and both were wonderful. Patty started with the Chop's House Salad and was equally enthused. For the second course, Patty ordered the 8 oz. New York Strip while I had the 6 oz. Filet Mignon. The Filet carried an $8 additional charge to the $29.95 we each paid for this special. We both really liked her dessert choice of Salted Caramel Sundae. Atmosphere was adequate, service was as close to perfection as it needs to be and the final pre-tip bill was only $83.

My Caesar Salad--sorry I didn't get a picture of our steaks! We were too busy eating!

One full day left in Door County!
