Our Trip to Door County (2023)--Day 7
5/26/2023

Been Fun but Time To Head Home!

After a night of not sleeping very well, I was awake at 6 a.m. The front desk wasn’t to be open until 8:00—we found out later that all we had to do was leave our room key cards on the counter and off we could go. Nice to know next time!

But having two hours to work with before departing gave me time to make sure everything was packed. Having printed a second pack list before we left made this an easy task.

The desk ladies had told us previously that this weekend would be the first big one in Door County for the season, so we were glad to be getting out of there. The “long lonesome highways” we had enjoyed during this past week would be a thing of the past had we stayed. Chicagoland is only a 4 hour drive from Door County and those Illinois folks love Door County! The prospect of bumper-to-bumper traffic as we made our way to various locations such as Fish Creek, Sister Bay and others didn’t impress us much. As it had turned out, we picked a perfect time to visit and the weather had certainly cooperated! Not a drop of rain had fallen and there were few clouds to be found. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires had very slightly obscured nearly perfect visibility over the first four days but yesterday and today had seen clearing conditions, albeit a bit chilly.

The drive home took just over seven hours, with a lunch stop at Culver’s in Wausau, a stop at Kwik Trip in Abbotsford to fill the gas tank and a couple bathroom breaks. Overall, we spent under $100 on gas during this trip and our total cost was just under $2,000, averaging about $330 per day. This compared very favorably to previous Hawai’i trips.

With no hesitation, we can say we were glad to have made this trip. Everything went off without a hitch, the car handled great and we had perfect weather for a pre-Memorial Day trip; no rain and reasonable temperatures. Do we recommend Door County to others? Without a doubt. Likewise, the Newport Resort in Egg Harbor.
