Kapalua Coastal Hike

Patty got back on track this morning by getting up at 5:20. I slept in until 6:30, followed with the standard peanut butter toast and cup of coffee for breakfast. We walked the beach for only two laps and then headed up to Kapalua to see if the Coastal Trail was walkable today.

It was walkable and it was gorgeous. You would think that in our seven previous trips, I would have found this trail and this area. Much of the trail was near the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, and their beach “bungalows” are fabulous, nicer than similar Wailea lodging. The landscape was a mix of green and volcanic rock, passing by unused Oneloa Beach. The trail also took you past a couple coves where waves were crashing against the rocks. Very impressive, and Patty was glad we did this hike.

Beach Bums Bar & Grill

Back at the room, I was feeling slightly dehydrated, yet found myself heading outside to get some more sun. This worsened my need for fluid intake, and by the time I finished tanning (under an hour and a half), I felt fairly parched. I headed back to our room, showered and then took a nearly three hour nap before Patty awakened me. Our dinner tonight was at Beach Bums Bar & Grill in Ma`alaea.

What can I say about this restaurant? Well, for starters, the food here sucks. Okay, just the meat. Oh, and the cole slaw. And Mac Salad. I ordered the BBQ sampler, a mix of Ribs, Smoked Beef (Brisket), pulled pork and spicy sausage. Only the sausage was reasonably tasty. They feature two different kinds of sauce for your BBQ and neither one helped. Nor did a combination of the two. Initially I thought maybe it was just me, not being much of a BBQ person, but Patty concurred with my assessment, and she loves BBQ. Hers was equally inedible. You shouldn’t have to work so hard to get BBQ off the bone. At Fat Daddy’s, she said the meat basically fell off the bone. Here, it had to be wrenched off the bone with her teeth.

The topper? The meal cost us $56 pre-tip! Suffice to say this was our most disappointing meal thus far.

Back to the Lahaina Shores, Patty hit the sack early. I hit the hot tub for over an hour and met a nice variety of fellow vacationers. One guy lives in Honolulu and said he woke up hung over this morning with a voice message from his friend asking if he wanted to go to Maui today. Pretty nice to be able to do something like this (inter-island travel) on a moment’s notice!

A couple from Arizona just arrived on Maui today after getting married on the North Shore (sounds like Turtle Bay) of Oahu a couple days ago. They were fun to talk to, being “Maui virgins”, and I helped with a few pointers.

Didn’t get to sleep until midnight. That long nap I had certainly contributed.
