Our Trip to Maui (2012)--Day 13
5/4/2012

Patty slept in this morning, but I was out of bed up at 6:45. With breakfast finished, I hit the beach. Clouds prevailed this morning and turned to light sprinkles while I walked for an hour. It put me in a somewhat foul mood. Dumb, considering this is the first rain we’ve had in Lahaina in the twelve days we’ve been here! Also dumb due to the fact that this is a warm rain. Nothing at all like the cold rain we get in Duluth! So, the solution was simple; go to the Alano Club and take in the Coffee Break meeting at 9:00. We had about 30-35 people in attendance and it was a Daily Reflections meeting. Very nice to hear some solutions and thoroughly enjoyable. These meetings always re-center me emotionally and spiritually.

Stopped by Maui Kayaks on the way back to the hotel and picked up a T-shirt for $15. This is a good deal, by Maui standards. Patty was walking the beach when I returned to the hotel, so I joined her for about 1 1/2 laps. Afterward, she headed off to the Alanon meeting on the corner or Shaw & Waine`e Streets and I took advantage of the time to get some napping in. Our sleeping had been disturbed last night by loud music coming from the Rhapsody of the Seas which had been anchored just offshore prior to its setting sail (thankfully) soon after midnight. The hour nap I caught while she’s gone helps quite a bit.

When she returned, I hit the sun for about an hour and a half. The rainy conditions of the morning had given way to a mix of clouds and sun. Even when it rains here, you can nearly always count on the sun making an appearance at some point during the day.

Colleen's at the Cannery

We drove up to Haiku at 4:30, bound for Colleen’s at the Cannery. It’s a first-time restaurant for us, and we never know what to expect from these places. It’s apparently very popular with the locals--which is usually a good sign. Patty noticed the pizza they are selling by the slice as we first walk in, and told me it looked really good. It’s a bright and fairly loud place, with maybe 1/3 of the tables filled. They weren't serving dinner until 5:30 but the waitress took our order a little early, explaining that the computer won’t let her enter the order until 5:30. Fine by us.

I started with a Caesar Salad, and Patty asked for a second plate so I could share with her. Don’t recall asking her if she wanted to help. This was a very good salad!

My vodka penne pasta arrived with Patty’s Ho`okipa Pizza, a mix of pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions and red peppers. Fantastic! Her pizza, I mean. My pasta was fairly good but the chicken seemed a little off. Maybe it just wasn’t a good fit with the other ingredients in the dish.

Overall, it was a good dining decision.

When Bill, the desk clerk, told us they had half-day rooms available for $125, we decided to cancel our May 10 reservation at the Maui Seaside hotel. This would cost us an extra $25 or so, but being able to stay in this hotel is worth the few extra dollars. Besides, check-in at the Maui Seaside isn’t until 3 p.m., leaving us with the question of what to do during that time. Considering we’re headed back to the airport at around 6 p.m., staying here for Thursday afternoon makes sense.

One week left in paradise.
