Our Trip To Maui (2018)--Day 18
5/22/2018

Only two full days remain on this trip! The plan was to get up by 5:00 and get over to 808 Grindz Cafe by 6:45 for their 7 a.m. opening. Yes, the place fills up that quickly each morning when they open. Patty wanted to sleep in this morning, however, so we skipped our breakfast plan. This is the fourth time in the past week she ignored the 5 a.m. cell phone alarm, but it woke me up each time, of course. So I cancel the alarm.

I headed out for my morning walk to the Cannery Mall; such a nice, albeit a bit warm! By the time I returned to the room, Patty had finally rolled out of bed and was watching TV. We decided to make a trip to the North Shore this morning, and arrived around 10:00 at Kanaha Beach, north of the airport. This is a very popular windsurfing location, but basically nobody was on the beeach this early. We chatted with the few people who were there and they advised the windsurfers wouldn't show up until the afternoon, when the winds picked up. We don't feel like hanging around and waiting that long. So, it was off to Ho`okipa where we found some surfers trying the slight north swell. We ended up conversing with a local who said that there are a lot of smaller sea turtles visible if you walk down a somewhat steep path nearby. He said he doesn't do this because he's slightly "broken down" physically from a skydiving accident--he landed awkwardly following a dive once and has been paying the price ever since. He said he's getting older, too, and I laugh at that, considering he said earlier he's 40. "How old do you think I am" I ask, and he replies "50". "Try 60", I respond. I don't know if he was just being nice or if the tan helps hide my age, but...

We had been planning to finish our beach combing with a visit to Baldwin Beach but decided to pass and head back to Lahaina. A few final loads of laundry needed to be done. I have some serious chafing at the top inside of my right thigh, and have no idea what caused it, other than the new underwear I bought prior to our trip. Plus, I've been doing a helluva lot of walking during this trip, so that could be contributing to my discomfort. I applied some Aloe Vera, and we spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out in the room while finishing up our laundry. It was another fantastic day here, sunny with temps in the upper 80's! In fact, we have only had to deal with rain twice while here, and probably three days where it was partly or mostly cloudy. The clouds do tend to build up a bit in the afternoon due to the daytime heating, so there haven't been many great sunsets to take pictures of.

Hanging out before heading over to Honu

Reservations were made for 6:00 at Honu, one of Mark Ellman's three restaurants which sit adjacent to each other on the water side of Front Street in Lahaina. We asked about securing a railside table but were told by the hostess one probably wouldn't be available until after sunset (7:15) but that we could get a table one row in from the rail. This was good enough for us, so we get seated. The atmosphere here is very good, with Honu being right on the ocean's edge. It was also busy tonight but not overly loud. At one point I saw Mark Ellman walking through the restaurant and into the kitchen. I found myself hoping that he would visit some of the tables which I've heard he does from time to time. But, after a while he reappeared near the front of the restaurant, talking to someone, then walked out the door and headed to the right--probably over to Frida's Beach House, his Mexican oriented restaurant.

Patty started by ordering the Kale Salad, and I knew exactly what I wanted to start with--the Ahi Bruschetta! I only got a half order, two fairly large pieces ($17). We then each ordered the Spicy Sausage Pizza, which is about the same size as the pizzas at Pi Artisan Pizza. What is it with me and pizza on this trip? I've ordered pizzas at Pi, Flatbread, Monkeypod Kitchen and now here. It's really tough to say which one I liked the best. Honu, Pi and Flatbread were the probably the best and it was a tossup between the three so far as which one I preferred. Flatbread was certainly the most unique with their combination of pork, pineapple and goat cheese.

After eating, I finished up with a great cup of coffee while we watch the sun set. This was yet another great dining experience at Honu, but it came at a high price considering what we had--$102, including tip.
