Our Trip To Maui (2018)--Day 6
5/10/2018

Following a long night, we slept in just a bit this morning, but we were both up by 6:30. I hung out in the room after breakfast while Patty walked the beach.

Yesterday was the best day we've had so far and one of the best days we've enjoyed in recent Maui trips. Today was much more sedate, Winds were light and variable today, leading to some clouds, especially later in the afternoon. VOG was a possibility but the forecasters aren't sure yet. This pattern is expected to repeat tomorrow with the normal late spring pattern of trade winds and sunny skies expected to return on Saturday. Let's hope so!

Time to talk about this room--we've been here for four days now and we always do a spiel about the features, what we like and don't like, and how it compares to other rooms we've stayed in at this hotel.

The short of it; this room is the second best room we've stayed in. While not up to the standards of room 505, you need to take into consideration that this room is $60 less per night. Is the extra cost worth going back to 505 in the future? This is the question we're pondering.

The shower is very nice, but the drawer space in the bathroom is somewhat limited. Chase N Rainbows has appointed this room the same as the other rooms they offer, which is nice. There is an abundance of trash can liners, toilet paper, linens, etc.

The king-size bed is similar to that in 505, and very comfortable. There are no bar stools, however, and that's a minus. The booth 505 features was essentially useless to us as there were no outlets so I couldn't sit there on my laptop, nor Patty with her I-pad. We prefer the standard glass table here, with two outlets, one on each side of the table.

The TV is nice but not as large as that found in 505. It is a Smart TV, however, so we do have access to Netflix. I haven't figured out yet if we can access Youtube. A DVD player is included.

There are two nice soft chairs instead of the long desk featured in 505. There is sufficient dresser space.

This room has the older patio doors which lock on the far right side; we liked the doors which opened in the middle in 505. Many rooms upgraded to the newer center-open doors when the hotel underwent a major renovation in 2008-09. The outside chairs are high chairs, with an accompanying table, and we're on the fence as to whether or night we prefer this style.

There is plenty of closet space but the hangers are limited. They're sufficient for now but if we buy more T-shirts while here, that could change.

Kitchen appliances are quite adequate. There is no ice dispenser but there is an ice maker in the freezer compartment. Patty likes the coffee maker very much. The smoke detector went off Tuesday morning while making my morning toast, prompting a move of the toaster to the center island/nook area.

Overall, this is a great room and well worth the $198 a night we're paying.

The Maui Ocean Center was our destination this morning, arriving just before 10 a.m. It is now $30/person to enter, and is well worth the money. This was the fourth time we've been here and each visit has been quite enjoyable with the various ocean exhibits. We were too early to see the 11:30 feeding, so we completed our self-guided tour by 11:00. I was in need of food, so we stopped at Leoda's in Olowalu on the way back to Lahaina. My favorite there had been the Pastrami & Swiss sandwich but I wanted to try something different today. The "Pork, Pork.....ummmm, Pork" sandwich looked interesting so I gave it a try. With Proscuitto, Duroc ham, applewood bacon, salami and swiss cheese (among other items), this was a tasty, salty treat!

We hit the sun after returning to the hotel but didn't last very long. Despite the high clouds, the wind was almost nonexistent and this contributed to the muggy conditions. I got cooked in under an hour.

The tradition of sun/nap/shower filled the afternoon and we headed out in the Sentra at 4 p.m., bound for Paia. Our dinner destination? Milagros Food Company. Traffic has been surprisingly easy so far in this trip, considering the constant mess we found in 2016. We were concerned that rush hour traffic would be a bear, but the only slow down occurred near the pali and McGregor Point.

Arriving in Paia, we quickly discovered that parking is a major issue here! We drove past a free lot thinking there would be on-street parking near the restaurant. No such luck, and we eventually returned to the free lot. It's only two short blocks from Milagros and insanely busy.

The majority of seating at Milagros is outside (albeit covered). No seating is available at these coveted tables so we had to sit inside, where was is nice and dark but louder and more crowded. Brigitte, our server, was friendly, helpful and very prompt. I considered the Shrimp Caesar Salad, but decided to get the Chicken Caesar, along with an appetizer (chips and salsa). Patty ordered the Organic Greens with chicken. The salads we received were huge! More than either of us could finish. Overall, this was a good (but not great) dining experience. I think we would like to return here only if we could sit in the outside area.

After dinner, Walmart was calling as we needed to replenish some food items--back at the hotel, the hot tub is full of people, and we stayed until 9 p.m. TV, in bed by 11:00.
