Four years ago we went to Cuatro in Kihei for the first time. Based on James and Molly Jacobson's book Top Maui Restaurants, we wanted to try this place out. Cuatro is set in a small strip mall near Foodland, so expectations of ambience were quite muted.
The ambience, as it turned out, was just fine. There is no outside view here (unless you consider a parking lot to be a "view"), but the food was exceptional, as was the service. The best part was the 25% off Early Bird Special, which applied to meals offered between 4-6 p.m.
A revisit two years later did nothing to mute our enthusiasm for this place.
And tonight's visit reaffirmed that Cuatro is our favorite restaurant on the island.
We started off with the same appetizers we had salivated over in 2014; Asian Style Pupu Steak for Patty, Spicy Tuna Nachos for me. Fantastic! Both are so good, in fact, that we couldn't resist digging our forks into the other ones 'tizer, so in effect, it turned into two shared pupus. The layering and blending of flavors on the Nachos is unparalleled, in my opinion. And Patty is a huge fan of the pupu steak (as am I!)
From there, we both had salads; House Salad for Patty, Tijuana Caesar Salad for me. Their Caesar is the best I've had on Maui.
The entree I ordered, Roasted Chicken Breast, was likewise quite good, but the appetizers and salads we had already enjoyed were a tough act to follow.
All in all, this was another incredible Cuatro dining experience for us. The best part may be that the Early Bird Special is still in effect here, and our final bill, pre-tip, was only $60. Wow!
On our next visit to Cuatro, we're going to order a third appetizer (at the waiter's recommendation) and try the Shrimp Mini Tacos in lieu of my Chicken Breast entree.
