Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Caribbean Cruise (2011)--Day 9
4/25/2011

We slept in (for a change) until 6:30 this morning. Upon awakening, we could see Puerto Limon, Costa Rica approaching. There was no rush today since we didn't have an activity booked, so we got to the Windjammer after 7:30 to find it not busy at all. After chowing, we left the ship and found a large market nearby. It reminded me of an under-roof version of the Aloha Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. Tons of t-shirts, caps, coffee, souvenirs and knick-knacks which seemed to repeat themselves after the first couple of aisles. We each bought a t-shirt and I bought a nice orange cap which says "Costa Rica--Pura Vida" (Pure Life) for only $5.

Back to the ship, we decided to hit the pool for awhile, and Patty went and pulled a--well, she pulled a Patty! While I was at the towel station securing a few towels for us to put on our lawn chairs, she decided to check the pool water out. There is a shallow one-foot deep area around the edge of the pool, with deeper water inside that. Not knowing where the deep water started, Patty stepped off the shallow part and fell into five-foot deep water. She was carrying her fanny pack at the time, and it got soaked, including about $70 she was carrying in the pack. The worst part was she also had her remaining supply of cholesterol pills (Omega-3 fish oil tabs) in a pocket, and they quickly dissolved in the salty water, turning her fanny pack into a fishy, stinking mess! Baffled and astounded with her not knowing about swimming pools (you know, they usually have a deep part and few--other than kiddie pools--those pools are only 1-2 feet deep throughout), I let her know this. Of course. And with little tolerance. Of course. Naturally, this made nothing better. OF COURSE! Twelve hours later, her fanny pack still had that very strong fishy odor--she put it outside on the balcony as there was no way I was going to let her keep that pack inside and stink up the stateroom more than it already stunk. Not a pleasant occurrence, to be sure.

We got our laundry back tonight--a $36 charge which wasn't bad considering how expensive everything is on a RCCL ship. By comparison, they charge $1.69 for a Snickers bar, $4.99 for a can of Pringles potato chips!!

A so-so dinner was followed by a nice sunset. The ship left port after sunset.

I miss home. Taking another cruise in the future is unlikely. I can't justify the cost per day which is significantly higher than taking a trip to Hawai`i. I'm also somewhat sick of people, sick of crowds.

Departing Costa Rica
