Our Trip to Hawai'i (2010)--Day 18
5/5/2010

Dreary, Dreary

Up and at 'em at 6:15 this morning, starting with the usual breakfast and walking. Well, not much walking--I found myself lacking my motivation so I stopped after one lap. We're a little testy with each other and could use some space apart. We were planning to drive the backside of Haleakala as far as the pavement allowed (in other words, to the point where the rental car agency says you aren't authorized to drive!), but I grew weary of waiting for Patty to finish walking so I wrote her a short note and headed up north with the D90. Conditions on previous days had not been conducive to getting good pics and today was no exception. By the time I had reached Napili, it was pretty socked in with clouds and a few rain sprinkles. So, it was back to Lahaina where I spent a couple hours out on the lawnchair grumbling to myself under the clouds.

Da Kitchen

Da Kitchen in Lahaina was our dinner spot tonight and we found it disappointing. Patty enjoyed her Teriyaki Chicken (she called it "outstanding"), my Loco Moco was not up to par--at least if par is the similar plate lunch I had at the Kahului location. Flies were also a problem here.

Gelato for dessert? Why not? We had read much about it but never had the opportunity to try it. Must say I was impressed with what we had at Ono Gelato on Front Street. Patty thinks it's expensive; well hello, it's Maui! After catching a very nice sunset from the seawall near Cheeseburger In Paradise, we returned to the hotel. This new Canon Powershot S90 I bought last autumn is an extremely nice compact digital camera, much nicer than any Nikon compacts I'd owned in the past.
