West Maui Fires
KITV-TV reports the Honoapi`ilani Highway is closed from Ma`alaea north to Launiapoko this morning so apparently the fires are not contained as we had thought last night. Trade winds are back! VOG is lifting and I can see Lanai once again, but not as clear as it usually is. I think part of this may be due to the smoke from the fires drifting westward--we could smell it a bit this morning during our beach walk.
I did three laps on the beach and hit the sun--again, it started off sunny but then clouds rolled in as the winds increased as they have most days during the late morning-early afternoon. Lunch fare was leftover pasta from last night's meal at Aroma d'Italia. After a nap, we awoke to nice sunny conditions.
The highway was back open but choppers were still hauling water in an attempt to further contain the fires. We learned later tonight that over 1,100 acres had been scorched and the fire at one time was within twenty feet of the highway! We noticed scorching on parts of the mountainside as we drove past Olowalu, all the way to the Ukumehame Valley, one of my favorite vistas for photos.
Cafe O Lei
Engaged in a little shopping at the Rainbow Mall in Kihei prior to our 4:30 dinner--I found another T-shirt, my eighth one! Staff at Cafe o Lei was efficient and waiter was good but not overly outgoing. He wouldn't let Patty substitute soup for salad, which is unfortunate as the salad is a mix of greens which are not very tasty. Patty ordered the ribs and realized out (after getting her plate) they were beef ribs, not pork ribs. She verdict? "They're okay" which is Patty-speak for "this sort of sucks". I got the New York strip with onion rings and garlic mashed potatoes. Pretty good! We shared some vanilla bean ice cream for dessert (three scoops of Lapperts). Atmosphere here was so-so--it's an enclosed restaurant with no real views of anything. $70 total. It's doubtful we would return.
Back to the hotel by 6:30, and off on foot to the Livewire Cafe to check out locations of a couple places we're looking for. Sleep by 11:00.
