Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip to Hawai'i (2010)--Day 15
5/2/2010

More sun, more fun!

Up early as nearly always, I ate, walked the beach before heading over to the 9:00 meeting. It's mostly clear today but voggy--can hardly see Lanai from the beach! Patty went off somewhere--church? Holy Innocents has a 10:00 service which she was talking about attending.

Alright, I'll say this one more time--you can't beat falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. Sometimes I awake when the sprinklers go off between 3-4 a.m., as they do every night. It's dry on this side of the island, so watering the resorts' lawns is a necessity at times. In the morning, people are out on the beach, mostly walking, and residents are walking their dogs on the sand. At 8 a.m., Front Street is nearly deserted, virtually every shop is closed, so it's a good time to walk around and take pictures.

We're trying to decide on one or two more restaurants to try out--so far we have Ruby's (tonight prior to the Brothers Cazimero concert), Longhis, Cassanova, Cafe o Lei, Da Kitchen. Joe's in Wailea is a possibility. Aroma d'Italia is probable. We need to select one more restaurant and would prefer not to dine at any place we've already eaten at.

It was another excellent meeting today, the topic being acceptance. Bought a Lahaina Alano Club t-shirt for $20 and it's money well spent. The Club has a $330 thousand balloon payment due in late 2012. It's not a good situation. Failing a major contributor stepping up, I can't envision a scenario where they can meet this obligation. I mean, the numbers just don't work. And then what? Will they be able to refinance? Or would they be forced to find another home? I hope and pray it doesn't come to that for the folks doing an excellent service for people in need.

Patty came home from the church service and told me about some of the more "interesting" people who show up at that place. During communion a very drunk and somewhat mouthy guy was standing next to her and would not shut up. She put with him for a brief time and then went "SHHHHH!!!" quite loudly. He asked her "did you just shush me?!", she replied, "Yes, I did!", at which point the minister, who was apparently the drunk's brother, said to him "I will talk to you later". I was sorry I missed that!

Hazy sunshine prevailed today and I managed to squeeze in two hours of suntime between the meeting and lunch.

Brothers Cazimero

We decided on Ruby's in Kahului for dinner tonight, which reminds me quite a bit of Bridgeman's in Duluth, a classic burger/pop/ice cream joint. It was surprisingly good albeit a bit loud with all the families crowded in there, kids running about and so forth. Patty preferred their Patty Melt to what she had at Cool Cat Cafe, it being a bigger sandwich for less money. I still give a slight edge to Cool Cat, however.

Arriving at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) for the Brothers Cazimero concert, we were blown away by how close our seats were to the stage! Robert and Roland are still in their prime, capable of delivering a fun and moving performance. Tonight's concert was a special one as they did a theme show based on their personal favorite songs from the past.

Along with some hula (naturally) were some of our personal favorites such as Waikiki, Pua Hone, One Small Favor and Home In The Islands. Some chicken-skin stuff there! The crowd (not a sell-out) loved it all and left the theatre satisfied. Exiting the parking lot at the end of a MACC concert is one brutal bottleneck, so we just relaxed and enjoyed it all while listening to Hawaiian music from the car stereo.

Another wonderful day and evening but we're pooped--didn't get back to the hotel until 11 p.m.
