Best Luau On Maui

After last night's rain, the forecast was for more of the same today. We were hoping that it wouldn't dampen our plans for attending the Old Lahaina Luau tonight. Once again, the forecasters were wrong, and the sun came out strongly later in the morning.

Many people consider the Old Lahaina Luau to be the best on Maui. We don't have anything to compare it to, just the recommendations of those we've spoken to about the subject and the guidebooks, so we're proclaiming it to be "the best" mostly on faith. What we can compare the Old Lahaina Luau to is itself - we first attended this luau in 1996 when it was at their old venue behind the shops at 505 Front Street. Obviously, this was convenient as it was right next door to the Lahaina Shores. The food was good (by luau standards, so this is to be considered) then as it is now. Service is still great here as it was there. The show back then was longer; the show this year (as in 2004) lasted less than an hour. While authentic, we feel it isn't lengthy enough. The new location (where it OLL moved in 1998) near the Cannery Mall is extremely nice. Some would say it's beautiful, but I wouldn't go that far. Intimate? No. If you want an intimate event, then the Feast At Lele (now occupying the site behind 505 Front Street where the Old Lahaina Luau once was) is probably more to your liking, albeit more expensive. Each table at the Old Lahaina Luau seats eight people. While we've never had a problem with our table mates and have taken part in some nice conversations, it's really not our thing. But, it is something each visitor should experience at least once.
