Our Trip to Maui (2009)--Day 4

Best Pizza on Maui

There are a lot of pizzerias on Maui, and we've sampled a few in the past. Our trip to Flatbread Company in Pa`ia last year was promising but fell somewhat short. BJ's Chicago Pizzeria on Front Street still gets our vote as Maui's best. It's a deep-dish pizza, the crust is flaky and light, and they don't skimp on the toppings. We always choose sausage and pepperoni as our toppings and have never been disappointed. A medium pizza (six big pieces) will always leave us with leftovers for the next day's lunch. The only possible downside to their pizza is that it's somewhat salty (probably due to the large amount of pepperoni). It could use less pepperoni and more sausage. Maui Revealed's advice to have them hold the stewed tomatoes in favor of more tomato sauce is highly recommended by us, by the way. A sign of the economy's downturn was evident upon arrival at BJ's, as only one other table was occupied at 5 p.m. It was a recurring theme throughout our stay.

If you go to the Lahaina Cannery Mall expecting to find Border's Express, forget it. It's pau (done). Barnes & Noble opened up a nice store on the other side of the Honoapi`ilani Highway last year, and features a huge section of Hawaiiana. I could have easily dumped $200+ here, but wanted to make sure we have enough room in our checked luggage on our flight home. The Polynesian Hula Show at the Cannery Mall, done twice a week, was cute (and free). Met two couples in the hot tub tonight. They drove around the Northwest Coast today - said they had fun but got rained on while snorkeling at Honolua Bay. As far as driving around the northwest coast goes, we've considered it. It's harrowing and - well, let this link show you what one section of the road is like!

There was heavy rain forecast for later tonight, and sitting on the lanai after the pool and hot tub had closed, there was a lot of lightning over the ocean in the direction of Lanai. This was another first for us (seeing lightning and hearing thunder in Hawai`i). Overnight, flooding had caused a minor landslide, closing part of the Hana Highway. Our plans for going the long way around Hana past Kaupo are now in doubt.
