Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip to Hawai'i (2007)--Day 14
5/6/2007

Place of Refuge and more d*** clouds!

Cloudy skies prevailed once again for the fourth straight day! We also had some overnight rain as the tennis courts are wet; crews were out there mopping up as we left for a drive to the Place Of Refuge (Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park). This is a place where, in ancient Hawai`i, you could go to escape punishment for breaking kapu. This was important because, in the overwhelming number of instances, punishment for breaking kapu was death.

The entry fee is $5/vehicle. Since it was early in the day and cloudy, there were very few people here, so we wandered about with the self-guided tour pamphlet in hand, exploring all this place has to offer. It doesn't take long, and we returned to the hotel before noon.

Kona Brewing Company

The weather was bringing us down just a bit today so we kicked back in the room throughout the afternoon, watching TV and napping, waiting for the maid. By 2:30, the maid still hadn't appeared so we set out on a long and badly needed walk on Ali`i Drive. Dinner tonight was at the Kona Brewing Company. A 12" pizza with two toppings was $14--a good deal. We got the Parmesan sausage & pepperoni. After discussing our sauce choices with the waiter, we opted for the Cajun tomato sauce instead of the regular tomato sauce, which was a mistake! Too hot! Live and learn. Overall, it was a decent meal.
