Our Trip To Maui (2018)--Day 15
5/19/2018

We slept in a bit this morning, not rolling out of bed until after 7 a.m. This comes on the heels of a night where I fell asleep very early and then awoke from a dream just after midnight. The dream was about Jupiter Discount Store, where I worked from 1974 to 1979. I spent about an hour lying in bed thinking about doing a blog entry about this place, a sort of nostalgic piece about how things were and what once was. There was a story in Sports Illustrated in May 1972 entitled "A la Recherche du Tanks Perdu", which translates from French to be "In Search of Lost Time". I believe this is what my dream was telling me--that this was a time in my past where innocence was being lost but I had a long life ahead of me and all the possibilities that entailed. Has it turned out that way? Well, yes. For the most part. It's been a good life.

After the usual start to the morning, Patty headed out on her daily walk while I finished my morning coffee on the lanai. Looking north toward Molokai, the skies appeared surprisingly clear so I scrapped my plan to visit the North Shore and headed out up the main highway past Kapalua and hit the northwest coast. This is likely my favorite photo venue on Maui. The valleys, cliffs, ocean and lush green colors make for some stunning scenery. The road isn't difficult to navigate and is fully paved but you do have to be careful in a few places, sudden sharp turns are found here and there. It was sunny, windy and in the low 80's, and I found a number of tasty vantage points from which to take pictures. I can't wait to see what my Nikon D750, to be purchased after we return from our trip, will do with these locations!

Changing my plans on where to spend the morning also meant changing where to get pizza for lunch. Pizza Madness in Kihei is a considerable drive away, so I opted for Pi Artisan Pizza in Lahaina instead. Having a coupon for 1/2 off a second pizza made this an easy choice, and my timing was perfect as I arrived there soon after their 11:30 opening. With two of their Pi 3-Some pizzas in hand, I headed back to the hotel. This should take care of lunch on our final five days.

Patty had just returned from her Alanon meeting as I got back to the room. We headed outside for some sun, and I managed to cook for about an hour in the hottest part of the day. Aloe Vera, purchased at Longs Drugs a few days ago, is soothing after getting cooked.

Paia Fish Market was tonight's dinner venue. This place has been packed whenever we walk by their Front Street location, so the food has to be great, right?

Well, yes and no. Part of the problem was that we had already been to Coconut's Fish Cafe so anything we get here was going to be compared in that vein. While it isn't exactly fair to Paia Fish Market, this place fell short in nearly every way. The Chicken Tacos I had were good, no doubt, but not great. It certainly was a lot to eat, more than what we got at Coconut's, with the included cole slaw and Cajun rice, and I didn't quite finish despite Patty helping me with the rice. The atmosphere was a bit loud, and Patty described this as a "mess hall" atmosphere. The service was very good but the food quality didn't measure up to Coconut's standards. Not even close. But it is a cheap place to eat. Whether we would return here in the future is questionable.
