Our Trip To Maui (2018)--Day 13
5/17/2018

I was up at 3:30, for some reason, so I checked my Facebook page and saw that Josh sent me a message overnight, saying the "mystery car" left at 7:30 last night.

The usual breakfast was followed by our second batch of laundry. Some haze was in the air this morning along with clouds--Lanai wasn't obscured but the haze was still obvious. Weather forecasters are predicting the trade winds to return today and intensify by Friday. I think that tomorrow we'll hit the road to check out some of the beaches on the North Shore such as Kanaha, Baldwin and Ho`okipa.

It was too hot and muggy today to lay out in the sun so we hung out on the lanai and inside the condo until leaving for Kihei at 3 p.m. They've been doing some work on the southern terminus of the Lahaina Bypass which is expected to slow traffic somewhat for the next day or two, so we think that 1 1/2 hours should give us enough time to get make our 4:30 reservation at Cuatro.

On the road south of Lahaina

As it turns out, we had more than enough time. Making it to Cuatro 45 minutes before our reservation time, we checked out the old Aroma d'Italia place, right next to Cuatro. It has been closed for about eight years, and there is finally a new eatery in its place, called Kamana Kitchen. This serves Indian cuisine, which means we won't be going there.

We were allowed to be seated at 4:00, just as Cuatro opened. Our server, Tyler, explained today's fishes and preparations, but we were not here for the fish. We're here for the appetizers, which have been fantastic on our three previous trips here. The Spicy Tuna Nachos and Asian Style Pupu Steak are both must-haves, but I'm unclear on what our third appetizer should be. I asked Tyler if he prefered the Shrimp Mini Tacos or the Asian Style Pork Quesadilla. He prefers the former, so that was our third choice.

The Pupu Steak was, once again, fantastic. I'd have to say this is our favorite starter item at Cuatro. The Shrimp Mini-Tacos were also quite outstanding, with the onion salsa adding a nice bite to the preparation. The Tuna Nachos were good, make no mistake, but I believe they paled in comparison to the other two items.

Both our salads were good, but the Tijuana Caesar Salad seemed a bit over dressed. Still, this was one of the best Caesar Salads I've found on Maui.

With the 25% Happy Hour discount, Cuatro has reaffirmed why they're our favorite Maui restaurant!

The drive back to Lahaina turned into a mess starting at Maalaea--it took 38 minutes to go the 16 miles from there to Lahaina. Having some dumbass tailgating us most of the way didn't help matters. To top it off, as we were getting into the left turn lane at Kai Hele Ku Street, he suddenly veered into our lane just behind us. Without using his turn signal, of course (big surprise). Then, after about fifteen seconds waiting at the light, he suddenly veered back into the through lane (again, without benefit of a signal) and shoots past. Idiot.

I hit the hot tub by myself tonight, encountering a wide group of visitors from Los Angeles to Montana. The talk eventually steered into the political arena, so I said "shit, I went ten days without any political talk, and I was happy about it!", grabbed my stuff and headed back to the room.
