Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip to Maui (2014)--Day 7
5/11/2014

I hadn't thought of this until Bruce posted a Happy Anniversary message to me on Facebook. What anniversary? Then it occurred to me that today is the three year mark since my heart attack. Man, time flies. It also would have been my dad's 99th birthday.

Our morning walk on the beach revealed these photos:

This was, at one time, our dream beach house!

...until this house was built!

After our walk, Patty went shopping and I grabbed the Nikon with Front Street in mind.

Lush--great smells every time we walked by there...and we walked by there a lot!

I recall how I had so many concerns about our room, prior to our arrival. I couldn't see how a room this cheap ($155/night) could have so much to offer. But Chase N Rainbows has done a stellar job outfitting this room and preparing it for our stay. With things they supplied such as Saran Wrap, garbage bags, etc., I figure this saved us at least $50.

The only quibble I have is with the bed. It's not so much that we have twin beds, rather than a king bed, but it's a comfort issue. If I move just slightly to the right of center, the mattress tips to the right. It's far too soft, and I woke up with a slight backache most mornings. The other minor complaint we had was with the lack of an alarm clock, but I was able to program our cell phone to wake us up each morning. At least, it did on the morning we had to get up early!

Not having maid service isn't a problem at all for us. Chase N Rainbows will be doing a one-time cleaning midway through our stay, and there is a broom, dustpan and vacuum cleaner in case we track in sand or something like that. We have plenty of bedding and linens on hand--certainly enough to last us until they replace them this coming Thursday.

We decided to stay close to home tonight for dinner. After some discussion we thought we'd give Captain Jack's Island Grill on Front Street a try. This decision was with some apprehension--many reviews on Trip Advisor had been far less than complimentary.

And, once again, we found out why you should take these reviews with a grain of salt. The surly service we had anticipated was anything but surly--it was friendly and helpful. We also liked the atmosphere. We're people watchers and our rail side table on the second floor of the Wharf Center afforded great views of the area in front of the Pioneer Inn and the people walking by.

I found my Buccaneer's Penne to be outstanding!

Quite satisfied with our dinner, we took a walk by the Lahaina Harbor.

Back at our room, the clouds just above the horizon obscured the sunset, but it was still a nice image.
