Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip to Maui (2014)--Day 2
5/6/2014

With the five hour time difference between Minnesota and Hawai`i, our bodies hadn't quite adjusted yet, so we suffered a 4:30 a.m. awakening (if you can consider anything happening on Maui to cause "suffering", that is!) After showering and watching KITV news for a half hour, we headed over to the Pioneer Inn for breakfast. This place has become sort of a first-morning ritual for us over the past several trips. Their food is good, their prices are very reasonable by Maui standards. I ordered the two egg special with country potatoes, Portuguese sausage and toast. Patty got the fruit platter and was somewhat disappointed. For $10, she expected more.

Breakfast is served!

After returning to the hotel, we drove to Foodland and Safeway for groceries. How easy is it to spend $150 on groceries on Maui? Very easy! But we now had plenty of fruits, veggies, beverages and breakfast stuff to eat. These items wouldn't last us all three weeks, but it was a good start.

Otherwise, today was quite uneventful as the first day on Maui usually turns out to be. We spent some time checking out the condo room and what was supplied. I must say, Chase N Rainbows exceeded expectations. In addition to the six sets of towels, hand towels and wash cloths, they supplied plenty of bedding, a half-dozen rolls of toilet paper, plenty of liners for the two trash cans in the room, Saran Wrap, paper towels and Klennex. Not to mention enough coffee to get us through the first two days and a few dozen coffee filters. I'm sure this is standard, but it wasn't expected. It's nice to not have to go out and buy all those paper products!

Hallway with a large walk-in closet to the left.

Kitchenette with regulation stove/oven, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and dishwasher.

Full sized refrigerator/freezer

Living area..you can see part of our gorgeous view from the lanai!

Lanai with table and two chairs--the place to be in the early morning. And late evening. And any other time we want to soak up the views and smells.

All that junk laying in the yard? Staff is pruning the coconut trees this morning.

After getting some sun and relaxing, we walked to Bubba Gumps on Front Street for dinner. I know, it's a chain restaurant. The thing is, we don't have a Bubba Gumps in Duluth! So the chain/no chain thing really doesn't matter to us. It's decent food in a fun atmosphere right on the water, and the prices are reasonable.

Patty's Shrimp Cocktail. As a rule, she loves shrimp cocktail and this one was no exception.

Lt. Dan's Drunken Shrimp--I'm not a fish eater by nature, but the shrimp in this preparation is irresistible! Combined with onions strings, Andouille sausage and Kentucky bourbon sauce on top of mashed potatoes, this is one seriously tasty dish.

After finishing dinner, we strolled up and down Front Street, stopping at various shops to see if they have anything new. But we're tired, so there is no hot tub tonight and we sacked out by 8:30.
