The Move--Nov. 17
11/17/2010

With things fairly settled at our house, it was time to turn my attention to cleaning the old apartment. No doubt there would be some serious renovation required; sixteen years of normal wear and tear obviously dictates such. After telling Patty I would take care of the cleaning while she continued organizing our possessions at the house, I headed back to Duluth to deal with the apartment.

As it turned out, not much was needed; that is to say, what I cleaned ended up being replaced anyway. I vacuumed the carpet; they were soon replaced. I washed all the baseboards; those were torn out and replaced with new lighter baseboards. The bathtub was cleaned, and then it was redone. So basically, it was a token, symbolic effort on my part, and we ended up securing our initial deposit with interest when all was said and done.

Emotionally, this was not an easy afternoon. You don't just pack up and move from a residence of sixteen years without some memories and feelings. We had moved here shortly after our engagement in 1994, and had spent the first 14+ years of our marriage here. It was convenient. It was safe. It had also become far too crowded for our liking. We wanted and needed more space but that did not detract from the fact that we had some very good memories associated with this apartment.

In the end, each time a door is closed, a new one almost certainly opens up. That is the best way to describe this process in as few words as possible.

Here are a few final pictures from our vacated apartment at Summit Square
