The Move--Nov. 5

It took less than 90 minutes. At the end, we were walking out of the title company's office with the keys to our new house in our hands, nearly giddy with excitement. One huge phase of the process has been completed, and now it was on to the next step--moving our possessions. In the midst of all this, I knew there would be a certain amount of loss felt with abandoning the apartment. It had been our "home" for more than sixteen years. We had grown used to it, often loved it, detested it far less often. It was convenient and cheap. It also was something we had dumped money into for those years with nothing in return other than a place to live. It never was an asset. It was a convenience, and we had always accepted it in that vein.
Now things were about to change and happen--quickly.
The plan was simple; box up everything which could be fit into boxes, pile the boxes into our cars, and make the eight-mile trip up the freeway from Duluth to Proctor. Complicating this for the first couple days was that construction was still being finished up between the two points, with I-35 being reduced to one lane in each direction. While this was a small inconvenience during off-peak traffic hours, it was a near nightmare during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Several trips were made using our alternate route, which wasn't much better as many Duluthians were utilizing the same route! Ugh.
While this was going on, utilities needed to be set up; garbage, natural gas, electric, water & sewage, cable, internet. A whole slew of other businesses needed to be contacted in order to change our address. We had to set up the moving of our furniture and a few other large items (Lakeside Transfer) which we didn't want to move ourselves.
