Our Trip to Hawai'i (2010)--Day 20
5/7/2010

Kealia Pond & North Maui Beaches

Cloudy skies were dominating when we awoke at 7 a.m. and we hadd no real plan for the day. We like days like this, where you wake up and just go with whatever comes to mind. After a good walk on the beach, we drove down to the Kealia Pond near Kihei.

This walkway between Ma`alaea and Kihei is nice but fairly short. A couple of the beach views are worthy of a quick look and the West Maui Mountains provide a nice backdrop for pics. After finishing a shorter hike than we had intended, Ho`okipa Beach (our favorite Maui location to watch windsurfing) and Baldwin Beach were our next destinations. Hung out for a while at each beach then headed back to Lahaina for a quick lunch of last night's leftovers.

Casanova Restaurant

We had been to Makawao twice for dinner on previous trips, opting for Makawao Steakhouse both times. Tonight we decided on something different and found ourselves at Casanova, a nice Italian restaurant. My expectations of this place, for some reason, were a bit low. To be honest, I didn't expect much from Casanova. I could not have been more wrong! This was my favorite dinner of our trip, while Patty still feels Longhi's was the best. Whatever. I started with a Caesar Salad, then moved on to the Spaghetti Della Casa which comes with four meatballs of a ground beef/veal mixture. Fantastic! All this for only $14. Patty had a 12" build-your-own pizza with pepperoni and Italian sausage; she liked this a lot. Also, only $14. Total with beverages was just $40 pre-tip. Wow! The atmosphere here is nice; Casanova was a USO club during WW2. The bar was hopping and the restaurant was filled with happily munching people. Great! Just great.

The drive back down toward Kahului just after sunset is one of my favorite drives on Maui. You can see the lights of Kahului in the distance, the final light of day from the sunset on the other side of the West Maui Mountains and Kahakuloa Head rising up to the north. Doing this drive while listening to Hawaiian music is one of those simple pleasures I've come to love Maui for. Getting home well after dark, it was another early night with no hot tubbing.
