Our Trip to Hawai'i (2010)--Day 8

Honolulu Zoo
We started the day with a fairly long walk up Kapahulu Avenue to Leonard's Bakery with their legendary malasadas in mind. Many posters on the Trip Advisors forum had spoken very highly of this place so we had to find out for ourselves just how good those Portugese donuts are. As it turned out, they were wonderful! They didn't have any with strawberry filling so we got one with custard filling (yummy!) and one with chocolate filling (not quite so tasty). Afterward we took another stroll along the Ala Wai canal, which is turning into Patty's favorite walk. I also have enjoyed this pathway quite a bit.

Shar & Steve got to our hotel just after 9:00 and we headed across Kapahulu to the Honolulu Zoo. The admission price has gone up to $12 but it's still a decent deal. It's a nice place to walk around and take in the sights but we were all getting pretty tired. Steve's back is much worse today--not sure why since he's the youngest of the four of us, although he is the only one who does physical labor for a living.
I was able to catch some rays for a short time this afternoon. I hadn't realized before how noisy the pool area is here with all the traffic on the adjacent avenues. Later we headed over to the Reef, where Shar met us and said she and Steve would not be joining us for dinner tonight. S'okay. The Yard House was okay but I wouldn't return. We strolled along Ala Wai yet again after dinner. It's hard to remember what the Waikiki Beachwalk area used to look like before the 2005-07 construction when it was just a very crowded Lewers Street with its too-narrow sidewalks. Still, I miss what it used to be like, what it was like when we were here during our first trip in 1996. I miss the poolside bar and restaurant at the old Outrigger Village Hotel. It's far more upscale now, and the new Embassy Suites are way more expensive than what we would even consider paying for a hotel room. Oh well, it's progress. I guess.
Back at the Park Shore, we printed out tomorrow's boarding passes and headed back to the room for the night, watching a movie on Lois Wilson (the founder of Alanon). We thought the movie was very well done.
