Our Trip to Maui (2009)--Day 11
4/30/2009

It was a relaxing, mellow start to the day (as most days here are!). After breakfast, I gassed up our rental and fought my way northbound on the Honoapi`ilani Highway - if you're driving north from Lahaina, you can't find a worse time to do so than around 8 a.m. but I was hoping to get pics from the northwest coast. By the time I'd reached Napili, it was raining lightly and the dark clouds ahead made it clear there would be no worthy pics to be taken today.

One of the nice things about staying in Lahaina is a function of geography. The West Maui Mountains block most of this side of the island from clouds which pile up on the windward (east) side of the mountains. Of course, if you don't have trade winds, all bets are off. But it's funny; many times we've had sunny conditions in Lahaina, only to find clouds and sometimes rain farther north up the coast. Hopefully somebody can explain to me some day exactly how this works, but I suspect it has something to do with the relative proximity (and steepness) of the mountains to Lahaina relative to areas such as Kahana, Napili and Kapalua.

Fat Daddy's Smokehouse BBQ

In any event, it was nice and sunny nice back in town again; perfect for more sun worshipping. We then found a hidden surprise for dinner tonight at Fat Daddy's Smokehouse BBQ in Kihei. There is no real atmosphere here (other than the smell of especially tasty meat being cooked back in the kitchen). No matter; service here was prompt and friendly and the food was outstanding. Patty had the ribs and chose Mac & Cheese and Cole Slaw for her two side dishes. I was tempted to get the ribs but decided on the Smoked Brats instead, with baked beans - pretty good with a subtle chili flavor to them - and cole slaw. Being this was the eve of the seventh anniversary of my quitting smoking, Patty footed the bill for dinner. The price was reasonable for what turned out to be an excellent meal.

Afterward we made a trip up to Kahului, wanting to find out where the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) is in preparation for tomorrow night's Brothers Cazimero concert. We were back in Lahaina in time to get some sunset pics from the lanai. No hot tub tonight - one of the few downsides of staying here in late April, if you're a social-type person, is that there is little action in the hot tub and pool at night.
