Hearts in Hawai'i

Our Trip to Maui (2008)--Day 12
3/28/2008

After the customary breakfast and beach walk, we drove the length of Front Street, ending at Canoes' Restaurant where a co-worker's son has been working for a few months. We found out they didn't open until 3 p.m. Given we only have a few days left, returning here again isn't a priority. We checked out the Lahaina Cannery Mall, and the Borders Express bookstore has a huge selection of titles pertaining to the Hawaiian islands. I find a book entitled "Island Life 101" by Jill Engledow. Ironically, she'd been on TV just this morning and also had an article in a local paper written about her this past week, so I was intrigued by the book a bit. (Note: as of a month later, I still hadn't finished reading it, but it's an eye-opener for those contemplating the move to Hawai`i--as we have more than once).

Back to the hotel, sun...clean up...head out to dinner. There's a pattern there, you see.

Kobe Japanese Steakhouse

This restaurant features Tappanyaki style food, which is where the cook prepares your food in front of you on a metal grill, or hibachi. There were about twelve of us sitting around a U-shaped table. The preparation of your meals is a large part of the experience, as knives flash and they cut up veggies and meat, lighting things ablaze, all the while verbally engaging their customers. Our chef was very skilled yet not overly outgoing. Everything prepared for us was absolutely top-notch, with the exception of the soup (happily the first thing served up which gets it out of the way), which was overly salty and, simply, not good. Patty had the shrimp and chicken, I had the Sukiyaki Steak. By the time we left, we were full of delicious food. The final bill wasn't bad, either, at under $60. Kobe was a surprisingly good find which we initially had doubts about...until we started eating!
