Musings From the Lanai

With no rain these past two mornings, it was time to hit the Munger on the bicycle and rack up some miles. Saturday's ride was a short one of only 37 miles; the ride north was into a stiff wind which made the ride seem much longer than it was. Today's ride was 60 miles and was actually easier than the previous ride. The ongoing problem with the seat bone on my right side was remedied once I realized the seat was offset about a half-inch to the right. While fixing that, I also raised the seat about an inch, allowing me to get a more full extension on the downstroke. What a difference those two fixes made!

Meantime, I'm tempted by a new Nikon 80-200 f2.8 lens. I was toying with the idea of buying a 85mm f1.8 prime lens for the coming hockey season. My 18-200mm lens, which is great for nearly every situation I encounter, just isn't fast enough for indoor sports photography, when you consider that at full 200mm zoom, the fastest f-stop is 5.6. Not good. The 80-200 lens is f2.8 even at full zoom, and I think it'll work great for taking pics at East and UMD hockey games this coming season. The only downside is the price, as it's offered at a local camera shop for $750. Yikes!
